Difficult times

Things aren't too good at the moment. Since finding out about Mike's clot, we have been through three or four weeks of other problems, resulting in a visit to A & E at Good Hope where, after being seen by the doctors, and having a couple of scans, we were told that his kidney cancer had spread to his brain. I suppose the only 'good' thing, is there is only the one, small tumour. Everyone concerned at GH was very kind and helpful to us both, and after starting on a course of steroids and anti epilepsy drugs, his condition improved enough for him to come home on Friday evening. We are now waiting for a call from the Queen Elizabeth, where they plan to continue his treatment, as he is already under their care. In the meantime, he's almost back to himself again, thankgoodness. Our support team is back in action - our lovely family and good friends are all on standby. But it's hard, and I'm completely k...........d.

Popped down to the plot yesterday morning to pick up some veg and to check out what the vandals had done to Paul's polytunnel. The rats! (and that's the polite version). I really do feel sorry for him, as he has only recently completed it. I was relieved that they hadn't visited my plot too, but that would have been the least of my problems. As it was, everything seemed to be burgeoning down there, and I came away with more 'Vales Emerald' (did I mention, that I actually did find the label which I'd lost whilst earthing up the potatoes), more broad beans (best crop ever), strawberries and tayberries, a bag of salad, and a large bunch of sweetpeas. I still can't get over how long and strong their stems are - the flowers are pretty good too). It poured with rain on me and I had to retreat to the shed for a bit. What weird weather. Whatever happened to Flaming June? The only good thing is that it's cutting out the usual watering. The 'Alderman' peas are heading skyward, with plenty of flowers and pods forming, the runners well on their way, and the newly planted out French Beans 'Cobra' have settled in OK. There are courgettes forming now too. During my last visit I removed what remained of the shallots (this year's complete failure) and squeezed in some more cabbage plants in their place, just about streatching the mesh from the cabbage cage to cover them against any preditory insects and birds.

A Happy Fathers Day to all the dads, including one very special one here, at our house!

No pictures this time (will take one of the sweetpeas) and that's about it for a bit.
