Just realised how vertical my plot is becoming. I now have two arches, four wigwams for beans, a row of canes for sweetpeas, and today I added another wigwam (made from golden hazel stems) for more sweetpeas. The remaining prunings from the hazel will be used for supporting summer squashes. I suspect that I may not have finished erecting stuctures for climbing plants as I have just set some Morning Glory seeds, and there will be climbing French beans to accommodate.
Today was to be a relaxing one, as yesterday was particularly busy. After an intensive bout of housework which included tackling a large pile of ironing, I cooked a birthday meal for our youngest son (can't believe he's 37 - how time flies!). For the first time the table was extended to full length and eight of us had plenty of elbow room. Our granddaughter made a Noddy hat out of a red paper napkin for the birthday boy - very fetching. Another happy celebration with our sons, their lovely ladies, and our two delightful grandchildren. I had promised myself a day off today. "Just off to the plot to plant some more sweetpeas " I said to Mike. I planted the sweetpeas and then decided to collect some more tree chippings from the top of the hill, to front the compost area. Four barrow loads later I returned home. Feet up, lunch on knee and the Sunday paper. Lovely. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon re-setting the brick paving in the garden (where I'd removed a small pebble fountain last year). After washing and changing, I knocked together a fairly decent risotto and now, two glasses of white wine down, I'm actually relaxing - or will be, once I log off!
