Never a man to pass a skip without a glance, Mike has, over the years, collected a fair amount of 'useful' wood, which he stores in the garage. From time to time, it certainly has come in useful, despite my grumbles when I found myself negotiating the obstacles, on the way to the freezer. Eventually it was lifted up and stacked along the beams. Needless to say, other items filled the empty spaces! Still, that's his territory and as long as I can reach the freezer door, so be it. I'm prone to sudden bouts of inspiration during the early hours, when I can't sleep. "I don't suppose you've got any suitable wood for making a raised salad bed, have you?" I asked, on Thursday morning. And what a morning - bright blue sky, sunny, and really warm. Just the day for some DIY on the plot. The salad bed was constructed, opposite the shed door, painted green with shed paint, and is now ready for action. There was almost enough wood left to build a raised strawberry bed, although we will need a couple of longer side sections. In between the activity we took the opportunity to enjoy a few moments sitting in the sun. Mike went off home for a late lunch, leaving me to finish a few minor jobs, and tidy away the tools. My friendly Thai neighbour arrived on her bike and told me she was off to London this weekend where she'll celebrate Thai New Year at the temple in Wimbledon, so I'm looking forward to hearing all about it on her return. On the way back up the path I spotted Chris sitting outside her shed, so joined her for a few minutes before heading back home.
Prior to our meal, Mike and I were able to enjoy a G & T, sitting in the warm sun, under the budding grape vine. Perhaps a promise of things to come?
